Hypnobirthing is a method of birth preparation using a few simple techniques to help
facilitate a calm and relaxed labour and birth for mother and baby.
This is nothing new or fashionable about this, it is simple, logical and practical with a strong
evidence base to support it. Many women approach their labour and birth with fear because of the
negativity that surrounds them and the assumption that it has to be painful.
Fear during labour has a physiological effect on the bodies natural ability to function
effectively, causing pain, a slowing down of labour as well as blocking the release of the helpful hormones.
Hypnobirthing teaches woman to relax deeply, to trust their bodies ability to birth
naturally and to enable their mind and body to work in harmony. When all this happens the
woman is calm and relaxed and she feels more in control. In addition her body is able to
release all the supportive natural birth hormones that help make everything easier for
both her and the baby. These hormones are better designed than any
synthetic pharmaceutical drugs for a labouring woman giving birth naturally.
Women using these techniques are regularly reported to use less pain relief,
enjoy shorter labours and their babies are born calm and alert with high Apgar scores.
(The first test on a newborns physical condition after birth)
There is less medical intervention needed with Hypnobirthing women and when it is necessary the
women deals better with it afterwards because she has been more in control and
involved in the decision making regarding her care plan.
Having a positive birth experience without intervention results in calmer babies
that eat and sleep better. It also makes for strong confident mothers who trust themselves
and their natural instincts to make good choices for their families.
The Wise Hippo Birthing programme provides a complete antenatal education programme
that supports you and your birthing partner for your babies birth in a way that is right for you.
Using deep relaxation and breathing techniques it empowers you to trust your instincts
so your baby has the right birth on the day.
The Wise Hippo Birthing programme is a new approach to birthing.
We believe a positive birth experience is a state of mind,
not just defined by what happens during labour and birth
but how a woman feels about her baby’s birth.
Because of this belief we are able to teach skills and impart knowledge that will empower women
to trust their instincts and ensue their baby has the Right Birth on the Day
The Wise Hippo Birthing programme is not only about teaching women
how to have a positive birth experience, it is also about creating strong,
confident mothers who inherently trust themselves and by using their natural instincts
make choices that are right for themselves and their families. – ‘The Wise Hippo Ltd’

The Hypnobirthing classes take place in Harpenden at my home-based clinic
on Wednesday evenings and in St Albans, at the Verulam Clinic (only 2 mins walk
from the main train station) on a Saturday. The course is taught in small groups (no more than five couples)
and one-to-one classes are available in your own home, with both courses
taught over 4 sessions, each lasting 2.5 hours.
The best time to start the course is from approximately 20 weeks onwards. The reason for
this is that you will need to spend some time practicing the relaxation and breathing
techniques that you learn, so the more time you have the better! Although don’t worry
if you’re getting close to your child’s birth – Get in touch with me and we can discuss a
modified or private one-to-one course to suit your specific needs. It may also
be beneficial to look at the other treatments I offer.
